StarCraft is back as an open-world shooter, but there’s more to it than you’d think at first. While the wait will be long, we’ve already collected plenty of information about the StarCraft release date, confirmed platforms, and trailers, among other things, here.

BlizzCon 2026 was the stage where Blizzard Entertainment confirmed that the next chapter of the StarCraft universe will be told through an entirely different genre. While this (still untitled) shooter is moving the series forward, a new RTS could still happen, so there might be a bigger revival of the IP on the table.

StarCraft Shooter Release Date

Blizzard Entertainment hasn’t set a StarCraft release date yet. In fact, we haven’t even seen in-game footage yet. Despite rumours it’d been in the works for quite some time, it will be a few years before we can play it.

• StarCraft (shooter) release window: 2030

The game’s first and only trailer ended with the promise the game will be out by 2030. This has several implications, but more importantly, it signals there’s a lot of work ahead of the development team. It also explains why no gameplay footage was shared at BlizzCon 2026.

StarCraft Shooter Confirmed Platforms

No platforms have been confirmed for StarCraft yet, but it’s safe to assume Blizzard will be targeting PC as the main one. Beyond that, it’s all up in the air. By 2030, gamers will have access to beefier consoles, but we know nothing about them (or this game’s full scope) yet.

It could be argued Xbox might be interested in reinforcing its return to huge console exclusives by making the StarCraft shooter exclusive to Xbox, but that’s just speculation. So far, it appears Blizzard’s games are sticking to a multiplatform strategy, too.

Is the StarCraft shooter a sequel?

Yes, as revealed during BlizzCon 2026 and follow-up interviews with creative director Dan Hay (Far Cry series), the new StarCraft game happens about 70 years after the final events of the StarCraft 2 trilogy.

What’s the StarCraft shooter’s gameplay like?

We haven’t seen a single second of StarCraft gameplay yet, but the developers have confirmed it’s an open-world, single-player third-person shooter in which you create a custom Terran marine who can gain new equipment and abilities. It’s also described as story-heavy, which might come as a surprise after that CG reveal trailer that has more of a Helldivers 2 flavour.

Are the Zerg the only enemies in the StarCraft shooter?

Contrary to what the CG trailer might suggest, it was confirmed by Dan Hay that players will be fighting more than just the Zerg horde in the StarCraft shooter. The creative didn’t 100% confirm the Protoss will be in the game, but he mentioned all of StarCraft’s variety and flavour will be represented. Plus, he suggested there’s already a hint of something more in our first look at the game.

Is the StarCraft shooter a live service game?

Surprisingly, no, the StarCraft shooter won’t be a live service online shooter. At least, that’s not the plan right now. While it’s hard to imagine a Far Cry-like third-person StarCraft game not featuring some form of co-op, it seems the focus right now is on creating a compelling, premium experience that has a “definitive ending”.
