Nalua Studio has announced Gley Lancer: Overdrive, a new take on the 1992 Mega Drive shoot-’em-up Advanced Busterhawk Gley Lancer. The side-scrolling shooter is being rebuilt for Neo Geo AES and MVS hardware and will also launch for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam in 2027.
Rather than bringing the original game forward through a straightforward port, Nalua Studio is recreating its stages, artwork, music, and gameplay systems for the new release. The modern console and PC versions will support 16:9 widescreen alongside an optional 4:3 Neo Geo presentation. CRT filters, haptic feedback, mouse aiming, and Steam Deck support are also planned.
Gley Lancer: Overdrive keeps the original game’s 11-stage structure, though each stage has been redrawn and reworked. Artists involved with the new pixel art previously contributed to titles including Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge, Ninja Gaiden: Ragebound, Toxic Crusaders, and Lords of Exile. The cutscenes are also being redrawn, while the Mega Drive soundtrack is receiving new arrangements.
The story once again follows Federation Navy pilot Lucia Cabrock. After the Oberon, the ship carrying her father, is abducted by an unknown alien force, Lucia takes control of the experimental Gley Lancer and heads into hostile space to find him.
The biggest gameplay addition is the new Overdrive system. Activating it creates a temporary protective field that can also be aimed at enemies across eight directions. Enemies destroyed using Overdrive drop Cores that increase the player’s score multiplier, giving score-focused players an incentive to use the mechanic aggressively rather than only as a defensive tool.
Returning systems include the Mover and Gunner mechanics, which let players configure satellite weapons and their firing behavior. Overdrive expands those systems with additional Gunner types, a dedicated Gunner Mode, and a Speed Boost mechanic.
Several extra modes are planned, including Score Attack, Boss Rush, Speedrunner, 1CC, Stage/Boss Select, and Core Pickup Run. Multiple difficulty settings and endings are also included, while the modern-platform versions will feature a dedicated Bullet Hell mode.
Nalua Studio will bring a playable build of Gley Lancer: Overdrive to Tokyo Game Show 2026. The game will appear alongside Necro Pop at Hall 9, Booth C35 at Makuhari Messe from September 17 through September 21.
Gley Lancer: Overdrive is scheduled to launch in 2027.
